With 56 points, the La Escuelita Education Center in Oakland Unified School District was the highest scoring CHPS Verified Leader in the state of California. The project was separated into two phases, consisting of La Escuelita Elementary School (phase I) and MetWest High School (phase II). This multi-school project established 21st century K-12 educational spaces for students, a child development center, KDOL: the district’s education access television station, the district’s main data center as well as a community center for the broader Oakland community.
Sustainable, energy efficient design features are the hallmark of the La Escuelita Education Center, with evaporative cooling, photovoltaic energy, rainwater aqueducts, thermal mass construction, daylighting orientation with a sensitive design, and displacement ventilation.
