Inspired in part by the Case Study House Program of the mid-20th century, Vai Avenue Case Study was designed by LMSA as a Net-Zero Energy / Carbon Neutral single family residence to address the conditions of the 21st century. The house provides an open, flexible living space that maximizes connection to the outdoors while reducing net annual site energy consumption and carbon emissions less than zero. Utilizing conventional construction materials and readily available building technologies, this project illustrates that true Net-Zero Energy homes, located in typical suburban neighborhoods, are attainable today. The energy sipping, all-electric design includes a single heat pump for radiant heating, cooling and domestic hot water; heat recovery ventilators; solar thermal water domestic and pool water heating; a grey water system; on demand hot water recirc pumps; a night flushing ventilation system; induction cooktops including and induction wok burner, automatic lighting controls throughout and a net positive energy photovoltaic system. The project received LEED for Homes Platinum certification.
